So. I'm not entirely sure what timezone my internal clock is currently set to. I've spent about 10% of the last 3 weeks in the air. A trip from Berkeley to London. London to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh to Berkeley. I've abruptly uprooted myself and my family and have moved away from London, a place I called home for 2 years. We're now geographicly distributed on nearly antipodes of the US.
I'm certainly racking up the air miles.
I've also managed to spend more time in meetings in the last month than I have in the last 2 years. I'm a (cough) consultant helping a company associated with a large investment bank integrate software that I wrote with their existing systems. Call it culture shock for me, as I've been working with a bit more of a shoot-from-the-hip/agile development style, and am now working with a much more traditional waterfall development shops. So. No prototyping in code. Just lots of discussions and designing on paper and whiteboards.
I don't know if I should consider this growing up, or moving sideways and backwards. One of the places where I tend to be weakest these days is documentation. I'm almost phobic of sitting down and writing things down these days. I keep meaning to break the cycle, and start writing again. I suppose this will be an excuse to JFDI.
I'm itching to sit down and start cleaning up code. What I remembered as being clean and elegent now appears to need renovation. My coding style has matured some since I last touched this code base, and so I'm dying to apply some of the new techniques to what was written before.
I miss my ex-coworkers. Which is a new thing for me. I haven't tended to make binding friendships in my workplaces. But I was working with some truely class people. And it's unfortunately no longer an easy trip to see them, considering someone was rude enough to drop a whole ocean between us.
Anyway. Enough wibbling.
